Fundi Stores by IKIGAI began with a simple but bold idea: to supply quality building and construction materials to wholesalers and retailers. The early days were tough. “When we started, we didn’t even have a proper structure in place; there were times we sold in the rain,” recalls founder Vee Muhoro.
Her entrepreneurial spirit was shaped early on. Raised by a single mother after losing her father at age five, Vee grew up watching her mother run a business with determination and discipline. “Seeing my mom push her business and grow it over time has been my greatest motivation,” she says. “It gave me the courage to build something of my own.”
From just five employees, Fundi Stores has grown to a team of twelve with a steadily expanding customer base. “My younger self would be very proud of how much I’ve achieved so far. The future is bright!” Vee shares with a smile.
But success hasn’t come easy. Cash flow was a constant challenge; customers preferred flexible payment plans, while suppliers demanded cash up front. “Bridging that gap was one of the hardest parts of running our business,” Vee admits. “We missed opportunities and often faced delays.”
As a woman entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry, Vee also had to prove herself. “I’ve learned to stand my ground, build trust with suppliers and customers, and run the business with confidence,” she says.
